The mix on the UK 7 inch is the standard "Single Version". On the first edition CD single for "Strangelove", this mix is referred to as the "LP Mix", but it is not. Also, the first edition cardboard sleeve CD singles had red ink on the discs. Later pressings had blank ink.
There were a number of promotional releases for "Strangelove". The highlight is "DANCE BONG 13", which has a remix of "Strangelove" (The Fresh Ground Mix) featuring samples from the song "Word Up" by the band Cameo. Contrary to ads on auction web sites, DANCE BONG 13 only appeared on black vinyl. Colored vinyl and cassette issues of DANCE BONG 13 are pirate/bootleg releases.
"Strangelove" has appeared on CD a number of times. Along with the original 1987 cardboard sleeve five track edition, there was an eight track 1992 reissue, and the 2004 appearance in Box Set #4. These later CDs have all the 1987 remixes of "Strangelove", except for "The Fresh Ground Mix", which remains unreleased.
The mix on the US 7 inch is the standard "Single Version".
Significant to the US 12 inch single release (20696-0) is the "Blind Mix". Unlike every other release of this mix worldwide, the US release fades the mix out prematurely (by a little under a minute). This abnormal mastering job was also available on the Sire Records promotional CD compilation "Hit It", and on other US releases of the remix, until the 1991 CD single box sets.
The US cassette maxi single was the first cassette maxi single release for Depeche Mode in the United States. It is also, by far, the rarest one (along with "Behind The Wheel"). It was packaged in a "long box", which was an item CDs used to be sold in to deter theft (a long, cardboard box).
The second US 12 inch single (20769-0) for "Strangelove" actually started as the promotional 12 inch single. It became so popular in clubs that Reprise issued it as a limited commercial 12 inch single. The "7 inch Version" is actually an edited down version of the Pain Mix, exclusive to this promotional 12 inch, and it's limited edition commercial counterpart.
